Screw painting

23 09 2007

I hope this doesn’t get me branded as a Philistine, but I gotta tell
ya…DAMN I hate to paint. Maybe if I’d been taught how to do it when I
was a kid my response would be different, but as an adult who has been
working with digital art tools for the last God-knows-how-many years,
painting just sucks. The tools are imprecise and unwieldy. The medium
itself is inefficient and doesn’t exactly have an undo button. Hell,
paint COSTS MONEY for crying out loud. Absolutely ridiculous! For me,
the benefits of having actual depth and texture are lost in all the
setbacks of such a slow-moving glacier of a creation method. I do not
have the patience to mix a color, paint a layer, wait for it to dry,
fight with the paints for several minutes again to try and replicate
the original color-which is unlikely-paint two inches of material,
repeat.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love to LOOK at paintings. I think it’s
absolutely mind blowing that people can go through the above mentioned
speedbumps and create photorealistic works with texture and volume.
That’s incredible. But it’s not for me. I think I’m gonna have to a)be
a fan of real painting and b)stick to art via Photoshop because it
seems to be much more my speed.

:P
